Hunger, depression pushed me to comedy — Nasboi

Nasiru Lawal, a popular social media comedian and artiste, shares his highlights of 2023, including having a hit song called "Umbrella" towards the end of the year. He started his music career in 2006 and signed with Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde's label in 2014. He is currently signed to Eminent Transglobal Sounds Record Limited.

Nashiru has not stopped comedy for music, but he intends to create a balance between the two. If he had to choose between music and comedy, he would choose music because it is his first love. Comedy came later due to hunger and depression. Nasiru is also a shy person, but he has managed to overcome this by growing at every point and performing in front of many people.

When he featured Wande Coal on his song "Umbrella," he left an empty verse and hoped to find someone to feature. After meeting Wande at a gig, he was struck by his love for him and decided to collaborate with him. The process of the collaboration involved playing his songs for Wande and giving him some songs that he felt Wande would like more. When Wande returned to Nigeria, he called him and recorded his part. Nasiru was star-struck and amazed when they met.

The song was written during the rainy season, but Nasiru knew the only title that could fit it without going through any creative thought process. He believes that he will continue to grow as a comedian and artist, even if it means moving at a slower pace.
